Blue Demons looking for a faster start Friday at Cancun Challenge
CANCUN – One down and two to go.
No. 16/16 DePaul set out to sweep all three games at the Cancun Challenge, and the next step in that process comes on Friday against a talented Kansas State team.
The Blue Demons (2-1) will need to avoid the slow start that left them trailing Princeton for almost three quarters on Thursday before a decisive comeback in the fourth quarter turned the tide.
Kansas State (3-1) was down 40-31 at halftime to No. 14/14 Syracuse on Thursday before outscoring the Orange 17-6 in the third quarter for a 48-46 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
Syracuse (4-1) regained control in the fourth quarter outscoring the Wildcats 24-13 to claim a 70-61 victory.
There was a similar script for coach Doug Bruno's team that played catch-up until ending the third quarter in a 58-58 tie. Led by Mart'e Grays' 23 points along with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds from Chante Stonewall, DePaul outscored Princeton 24-9 and won going away 82-67.
Kansas State relies heavily on four guards and two forwards. Kayla Goth, Rachel Ranke and Christiana Carr are all 6-foot, 1-inch while Jasauen Beard measures in at 5-10. They are strong inside with 6-4 Peyton Williams and 6-2 Kali Jones.
On paper, the Blue Demons should match up well despite giving up some height at the guard positions. Kelly Campbell and Sonya Morris are both 5-10, Rebekah Dahlman is 5-9 and Ashton Millender is 5-8.
In the paint, 6-2 Mart'e Grays will match her speed and offensive versatility against the 6-4 Williams who leads the Wildcats averaging 12.3 points and 9.3 rebounds.
At the other forward spot, 6-1 Chante Stonewall has excelled in her last two games, combining for 37 points and 22 rebounds against No. 1/1 Notre Dame and Princeton. That's an average of nearly 19 points along with 11 rebounds.
Millender could again be a difference-maker on Friday. The sharp-shooting senior has poured in 37 points the last two games for an average of 18.5 a game. She has knocked down nine of her 17 attempts from three-point range which translates into a .529 swish percentage from deep.
Campbell has once again started filling out the stat sheet as evidenced by her eight points and nine rebounds against Princeton. Look for the always-energized junior to continue expanding her contributions all over the court.
DePaul has been remarkable from the free throw line the last two games, converting 28 of 31 attempts for a free throw percentage of 90.3 percent. Campbell has made her last six foul shots, Grays is 7-for-8, Dahlman 5-for-6 and Stonewall has made her last three.
