Blue Demons ready to raise their game Wednesday against NCAA dynasty
HARTFORD, Conn. – Two days after playing at sea level and setting all-time program records for points (124) and three-pointers (22) in a game, the No. 16/14 DePaul Blue Demons (4-2) are headed to the mountaintop of their sport.
No. 2/2 Connecticut (5-0) is the Mt. Everest of NCAA women's basketball, the gold standard by which every other aspiring champion is measured by.
The nonconference game set for a 6 p.m. (CT) tip at the XL Center can be seen on SNY and ESPN3. A live audio broadcast is available at depaulbluedemons.com with Dave Bernhard and Trish Babcock McGraw on the call.
The Huskies of coach Geno Auriemma have won more national titles and dominated their sport unlike any other.
Rising to the pinnacle where UConn resides will require an all-time performance by the program from Lincoln Park that prides itself on always seeking new heights to ascend.
It will take standout games from DePaul's "Core Four" of Mart'e Grays, Ashton Millender, Kelly Campbell and Chante Stonewall.
Stonewall is the BIG EAST Player of the Week and leads the team in scoring at 15.8 points, rebounding (7.7) and steals (17). Millender is averaging 12.8 points and Grays nearly 10 a game. Campbell is averaging 7.4 points, is second in rebounding and leads DePaul in assists, blocks and free throw shooting.
To help offset the Huskies' powerful lineup that perennially sends four or more players to the WNBA, the Blue Demons must counter with an overall team balance from a roster that goes 11-deep.
That means timely contributions from the likes of Tanita Allen, Rebekah Dahlman, Dee Bekelja and the freshman quartet of Sonya Morris, Lexi Held, Maya Stovall and Jolene Daninger.
The Blue Demons played at a high level on Nov. 17 against No. 1/1 Notre Dame at Wintrust Arena. Behind Millender (27 points) and Stonewall (21 points), DePaul was within eight of the Fighting Irish in the fourth quarter.
Despite Notre Dame pulling away down the stretch, that game showed what Bruno's team is capable of accomplishing. The 124 points the Blue Demons scored on Monday night was the most in a Division I game this season.
Connecticut appears to be its usual juggernaut self as the Huskies have won their first five games by an average of 33.2 points per game. Leading the way is Katie Lou Samuelson averaging 19.4 points and nearly six rebounds while Napheesa Collier is putting up 17.2 points and 9.8 rebounds a game.
Crystal Dangerfield is scoring 13.4 a game and leads the team in assists. Megan Walker checks in at 11.2 points a game and Christyn Williams is scoring 10 points a game.
