Blackman ran for DePaul from 1948-50 and was named the 1950 D-Club Athlete of the Year
CHICAGO – DePaul Athletics learned of the recent passing of DePaul track and field Hall of Fame Honoree Nathaniel Blackman. Blackman, 88 years old, ran for DePaul from 1948-50 and was named the 1950 D-Club Athlete of the Year. In 1978, Blackman was named to the DePaul Athletic Hall of Fame in only its third year of existence.
Blackman came to DePaul to run track in the fall of 1947, just months after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball. Blackman teamed with four other African-American teammates on DePaul's track program that season. Blackman was DePaul's first modern track and field star with the program's rejuvenation in 1948. He single-handedly upgraded the program's travel schedule, perpetuated by his prolific 400-meter running.
Blackman's prolific track and field career at DePaul was a precursor to his professional career as a public educator in Chicago. Blackman was the principal at Chicago's progressive Metro High School – a school without walls. Blackman's involvement with Metro vaulted him as an educational administrator and allowed him to speak around the country as an expert on urban education.
