Cain Leads DePaul Past Cleveland State

Senior scores 26 points in 83-73 win at Wintrust Arena
CHICAGO – Eli Cain scored a season-high 26 points and the Blue Demons used a late run to pull ahead as DePaul beat Cleveland State, 83-73, on Wednesday at Wintrust Arena. Cain led five in double-figures as Jalen Coleman-Lands added 15 points.
In addition to his season-high scoring output, Cain added three rebounds and two assists while senior Max Strus stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Coleman-Lands scored a season-high 15 points while Femi Olujobi and Paul Reed added 11 apiece and Jaylen Butz scored 10 points.
DePaul (4-1) fell behind early, 8-2, but would not stay dormant for long as a 10-0 run put the Blue Demons ahead 12-8 with 13:49 left in the opening half. Three and a half minutes later, the Vikings fought back to take a 17-16 lead, however Paul Reed would clean up the DePaul miss on the rebound, slamming home a put back dunk to give the host the lead again, 18-17.
With five minutes left in the opening half, Olujobi converted a three-point play knotting the score at 28-28 for the 10th tie of the game.
Over the final five minutes of the first half, DePaul outscored the Vikings 6-3 to go into the intermission leading, 34-31.
For the visitors it was 7-of-17 shooting from behind the arc that kept them in the game, as Cleveland State found success with the long ball early and often. Out of the break the Vikings continued their hot three-point shooting, knocking down four long shots in the first four minutes of the second half to move in front by a score of 45-43.
DePaul opened up a 54-48 lead midway through the second half, but Cleveland State wouldn't go away. Holding a 69-66 lead, the Blue Demons put together an 8-2 run to put the game out of reach before the 83-73 final.
Cleveland State (2-6) was led by Jaalam Hill and Tyree Appleby with 15 points each. The Vikings knocked down 13 three-pointers finishing two shy of the Wintrust Arena record of 15 three-pointers in a game.
DePaul returns to action on Monday night, as the Blue Demons host Florida A&M for a 7:30 p.m. tip at Wintrust Arena. The game can be seen on FS1 and heard on WSCR (670 AM).
