Day two at the Notre Dame Invitational nets three singles wins
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Day two at the competitive Notre Dame Invitational saw the Blue Demons walk off the Eck Tennis Pavilion courts with a trio of singles victories.
Leading the way on Saturday for coach Mark Ardizzone's team was Aspasia Avgeri who topped Minnesota's Caitlin Merzbacher 6-4, 6-3. Caitlyn is the daughter of former Golden Gopher women's tennis coach Chuck Merzbacher.
Alina Kuzmenkova came through with a timely 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback win over the Gophers' Bita Mancera.
Freshman Maddie Yergler locked up DePaul's third successful result of the day after a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Minnesota's River Hart. Both Keisha Clousing and Marija Jovicic came up short in their matches.
In doubles, Clousing and Jovicic dropped a 6-4 decision to Notre Dame's tandem of Cameron Corse and Bess Waldram.
Kuzmenkova and Avgeri fell 6-2 to the Fighting Irish's Zoe Spence and Brooke Broda. In an unofficial match, the combined duo of Minnesota's Camila Vargas and DePaul's Maddie Yergler lost 7-5 to Notre Dame's Maeve Koscielski and Ally Bojczuk.
The final round of competition begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday with doubles followed by singles. The Blue Demons will compete against players from Notre Dame and Minnesota.
