CHICAGO – For the second time this season, DePaul senior guard Max Strus was recognized by the conference office with BIG EAST Player of the Week honors. Strus led DePaul to a pair of wins last week while averaging 30.5 points and 10.5 rebounds with a combined 13 three-pointers in games against Chicago State and UIC.
Strus shot .529 (18-34) overall and .542 (13-24) from three-point range while going 12-for-16 from the free throw line last week. In addition to the impressive stat line, Strus also notched a pair of three-point field goal milestones as he became the 21st player in program history with 100 three-pointers against Chicago State and followed that with eight three-pointers against UIC to tie DePaul's single-game record.
Through this weekend's games, Strus leads the BIG EAST with 3.6 three-pointers per game and is also second with 8.4 rebounds per contest and his scoring average of 20.4 is fourth in the BIG EAST. The senior also claimed the BIG EAST Player of the Week recognition on Nov. 19. He joins Sammy Mejia as the only players in program history to earn BIG EAST Player of the Week honors twice in a season. Mejia won the award twice during the 2006-07 season.
Strus opened the week with a then-season high 27 points with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals against Chicago State. He bettered that effort on Friday night against UIC with career highs of 34 points and 13 rebounds with three assists and a steal. The 34 points marked his third career game at DePaul with 30 or more points.
Creighton's Marcus Zegarowski was selected as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. The BIG EAST Honor Roll consisted of Mitch Ballock from Creighton, Maliek White of Providence, Shamorie Ponds from St. John's, Seton Hall's Myles Powell and Xavier's Quentin Goodin.
The Blue Demons hold a 7-2 record for the best start since the 2002-03 team started with the same record. DePaul hosts Incarnate Word on Wednesday night at Wintrust Arena before Boston College visits Chicago on Saturday afternoon.
