Defending BIG EAST champion collides with Creighton at McGrath-Phillips Arena
CHICAGO – Defending BIG EAST champion No. 19/20 DePaul heads into the conference season ready to defend its title while also shooting for its sixth consecutive regular-season crown.
That all begins on Saturday when the Blue Demons welcome Creighton to McGrath-Phillips Arena for a 7 p.m. game.
The league's coaches were right on target in selecting DePaul and No. 22/19 Marquette as the preseason co-favorites. They will once again be the teams to beat.
After navigating through one of the toughest nonconference schedules in program history that included a challenging stretch of five games in seven days played in three different cities and two countries, the Blue Demons emerged with a robust 9-3 record.
The only losses came to No. 1/1 Connecticut, No. 2/2 Notre Dame and No. 15/14 Syracuse.
Despite the fierce competition, they lead the nation in three-pointers, three-point attempts and three-pointers per game. Coach Doug Bruno's team is also No. 3 in the country in assists, No. 4 in scoring offense, No. 6 in assists per game, No. 9 in free throw percentage and No. 12 in assist-turnover ratio.
Kelly Campbell is No. 21 in the nation in steals while Ashton Millender is No. 23 in three-pointers.
Millender leads the team in scoring at 13.8 points a game followed by Chante Stonewall (13 points), Mart'e Grays (12.2 points), Rebekah Dahlman (nine points a game), Dee Bekelja (8.5 points) and Kelly Campbell (8.4 points).
They ignite an offense that is lighting up the scoreboard for nearly 87 points a game. Stonewall is the leading rebounder at nearly seven a game while Campbell tops the team in assists, steals and free throw percentage.
The Blue Demon freshmen are developing into productive players, especially Lexi Held and Sonya Morris. Held leads the Blue Demons in field goal percentage and three-point shooting percentage while scoring in double figures the last three games. She has twice been honored as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.
Millender and Grays have already surpassed the 1,000-point mark for their careers this season and Dahlman needs 40 more points to join them.
Creighton has won five of its last six games heading into the BIG EAST season including wins over USF and Vanderbilt in the last two games. They are converting at nearly 38 percent from behind the arc and averaging 17 assists per game.
Audrey Faber leads the team in scoring (17.2 points), rebounds (5.6), three-pointers (30-of-79) and blocked shots (20). Jalyn Agnew is averaging 13.1 points and shooting .465 from distance.
