Blue Demons and Wildcats meet in Evanston at 11 a.m.
CHICAGO - Coming off a 65-50 win over Florida A&M Monday night at Wintrust Arena, the 5-1 Blue Demons will be looking to make it three wins in-a-row as they travel to Evanston to take on Northwestern. The matchup renews the rivalry between Chicagoland opponents 357 days after Max Strus dropped 33 points against the Wildcats in a 62-60 heartbreaker on the Blue Demons home floor last year. Here are three stats and storylines to get you ready for the game.
Moving Up The History Books: Eli Cain's ascent up the DePaul record books will be one of the most exciting storylines for Blue Demon fans to watch all season. Six games into his senior season, the fourth year combo guard is currently 24th all-time in scoring with 1,270 points (needing 37 points to pass Jim Lamkin and 60 points to pass Draelon Burns), 16th all-time in assists with 316 (needing 36 assists to pass Brandon Cole and 41 assists to pass Ron Norwood) and tied for ninth all-time in three-pointers with 130 (needing one to pass Brandon Young, five to pass Peter Patton and 12 to pass Billy Garrett Jr.).
New Blood in The Front Court: With the graduation of Marin Maric (currently playing professionally in Belgium) and Tre'Darius McCallum (currently playing in the NBA G League for the Windy City Bulls) at the end of last season, this year's DePaul team has relied heavily on sophomores Paul Reed and Jaylen Butz for increased minutes in addition to prominently featuring graduate transfer Femi Olujobi in his first year as a Blue Demon. Reed is averaging 7.8 points per game and 8.0 rebounds per game in 22.2 minutes (14 points and 14.4 rebounds per 40 minutes), Butz is averaging 8.3 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game in 23.3 minutes (14.2 points and 12.4 rebounds per 40 minutes) and Olujobi is averaging 10.7 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game in 23.7 minutes (18.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per 40 minutes).
Getting Back in The Swing of Things: After sitting out the 2017-18 season under NCAA transfer guidelines it was understood that it would take some time for junior shooting guard Jalen Coleman-Lands to shake the rust off. Six games into the 2018-19 season, Coleman-Lands appears to have done just that. After averaging 4.7 points per game in his first three contests of the year, in three games since then Coleman-Lands is averaging 13.3 points per game with all signs pointing towards the 6'4" native of Indianapolis continuing to get more and more comfortable in the offense.Â
