Blue Demons discover magnificent setting and glorious architecture of Mont St-Michel
NORMANDY, France - Coach Doug Bruno and the women's basketball team are on an 11-day trip to France and Italy which will include experiencing world-class sightseeing in Paris and Rome.
The Blue Demons will also walk in the footsteps of St. Vincent de Paul in Paris, visit Omaha Beach where Allied forces commenced the D-Day campaign in World War II and play three games against club teams from France and Italy.
DePaul student-athletes will share with us each day their thoughts and feelings on their encounters and discoveries during this incredible journey.
(8/17/2018) WBB Europe Tour: Day 6
Friday brought this close-knit and fun-loving team to the extraordinary Mont St.-Michel on the western edge of Normandy.
It is known as one of the true "Wonders of the Western World" because of its magnificent scene and glorious architecture.
Here is the report on day six from senior Tanita Allen as she breaks out a little French in her blog.
Bonjour les madams et les messieurs of the world!
We started our beautiful morning in Caen getting ready for our next adventure and were taken by our bus driver, Joop, to Mont St.-Michel, considered one of the great wonders of the western world!
It is an island in Normandy, France, and its history dates back to the year 708. This monument was a major focus of pilgrimage in the 10th Century.
The Benedictines settled there while a village grew below its walls. Mont St.-Michel was also an important defense stronghold against enemies throughout the 100 Years War.
In 1443, a small garrison held off an all-out attack by the English. The incoming tide would either strand, repel or drown many assailants.
During the French Revolution, it was used as a prison as was St. Vincent de Paul's home.
Mont St.-Michel is considered one of France's most recognizable landmarks, and our tour guide said it is visited by more than three million people a year.
Today, DePaul women's basketball was fortunate to be counted in that number. When we made it to the castle, I was so amazed at how beautiful and big it was.
After our tour, my teammates and I had lunch in the town and agreed that Mont St.-Michel definitely deserves to be named one of the most outstanding places to visit.
