(8/20/2018) WBB Europe Tour: Day 9
The Blue Demons explored classical Rome on Monday and went on a guided tour of the iconic Roman Forum, Colosseum and other ancient sites.
The Forum was the heart of ancient Rome and has been called the most celebrated meeting place in the history of the world. Triumphal processions and elections, public speeches, commercial business, criminal trials and gladiator matches were conducted there. The Forum annually attracts more than 4.5 million visitors.
The Colosseum is the iconic symbol of Imperial Rome and the largest amphitheater ever built. A capacity of 80,000 spectators could view gladiator matches, animal hunts, re-enactments of famous battles, executions and dramas of classical mythology.
Junior Chante Stonewall highlights day nine of the Europe trip.
As we near the end of our trip, the team had the opportunity to explore the great, world renowned Colosseum. Even in the steamy 84-degree weather, we were still fascinated by this humongous and breathtaking site.
We were told by our tour guide that 50,000 people once filled the Colosseum to witness executions, gladiator battles and there were even times when the Colosseum was filled with water for ship battles.
We also visited the Roman Forum and stood in the exact location where Julius Caesar was laid to rest.
After the tour, the team was free to browse downtown Rome. We shopped, ate fabulous Italian cuisine with gelato for dessert and continued to marvel at the historic surroundings.
For me, this trip has been one to remember. Beautiful weather, beautiful art and beautiful people.
At the top of the list of beautiful people are my teammates, coaches and athletics director, Jean Lenti Ponsetto. Our time together here has been special.
What makes it even more unforgettable is having my mother here to experience this trip with me. We never would have dreamed that my love for the game of basketball and my pursuit of earning a degree---which my family and I are proud of---would bring us to such amazing places as Paris and Rome.
Thank you to everyone in our DePaul family and the generous supporters of the women's basketball program that made this possible!
