The Blue Demons fall in three sets against UIC to conclude their time at the Chicago Cup.
CHICAGO – The Blue Demons wrapped up their time at the Chicago Cup after dropping in three sets 0-3 (12-25, 18-25,14-25) against UIC Saturday at Gentile Arena.
"UIC's setters were impeccable in location of their sets and in playing defense," said head coach, Marie Zidek. "Those are some excellent recruits Justin was able to bring in and they make his team operate smoothly.
"We were not able to meet their level of skill in any phase of the game. Despite some bright spots with Donna Brown in the middle, we were not able to make it a close fight tonight.
"We will look back on the entire weekend and prepare hard this week in practice for our BIG EAST weekend opener in Creighton and Providence."
In the first set, UIC burst out to an early 5-1 lead. Later in the set, DePaul went on a three-point run, decreasing the deficit to 6-11 but went on to fall 12-25.
DePaul took the lead and went up 5-2 before UIC caught up to tie things at 6-6 and again at 7's before the Flames jumped ahead. A 3-0 scoring run would eventually find UIC up 14-9. Regardless of a Dominika Kowalska service ace, and back-to-back kills from Ashley Marshall, Mariah Robinson and Emma Price, the Blue Demons were able to reach 18 points but dropped the second set to UIC.
UIC came out strong in the third set, powering out an instant 6-0 lead. Two consecutive DPU points and a few more UIC points brought the score to 9-2, forcing a DePaul timeout. Coming out of the timeout, an Isabell De La Rosa kill and Natalie Hayward service ace inched DePaul closer to the Flames. A 6-2 scoring run from UIC would cap off the final set with DePaul dropping 14-25.
DePaul will begin conference play next weekend with a match at Creighton Friday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 p.m. and will travel to Providence for a noon match on Sunday, Sept. 23. The Blue Demons will return to McGrath-Phillips Arena the following week to host Villanova on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m.
