Ramblers notched goal in first OT period
CHICAGO - DePaul dropped their home match on Tuesday to Loyola-Chicago, 0-1, at Wish Field. The Blue Demons now sit at .500 on the season with a 4-4-0 record.Â
Playing a majority of their penultimate non-conference match on the defensive end, the Blue Demons were outshot 13-4, lost the corner battle 8-1 and put up one shot on goal. Sophomore keeper Drew Nuelle made four saves in between the post.Â
The Ramblers' (3-3) golden goal came in the 93rd minute off a well-executed corner kick from Fabian Lifka that Grant Stoneman got a piece of and headed into the net, just past Nuelle's hands. Loyola put up five SOG while keeper Josh Lagudah made just one save on Tuesday for his third shutout of the season.Â
Head coach Mark Plotkin & Co. will turn their focus to BIG EAST play as they travel to D.C. to play Georgetown on Friday, but realizes his team can bounce back from this match.Â
"It's what we've been doing all year; you win a game, you lose a game," Plotkin said. "I think our guys have shown that we do respond when we're put in moments like this when when we don't win. So, we're back to the drawing board tomorrow morning and we've got an awesome team we're going to play against on Friday - Georgetown - one of the best teams in the country, and it's back to BIG EAST play so I know our guys will be ready for it."
As for Nuelle's performance today, Plotkin is grateful to have him in between the posts.Â
"All we ever ask him to do is to give us a chance to win a game, and he came up with some big saves for us in moments where our defense got broken down and that's what he's here for. He did a great job for us. (Having him in the net)Â gives (us) a ton of confidence. Just understanding you have a guy behind you - if you do make a mistake, he's got your back. Drew is a great leader on the team, has a great attitude, great work ethic and really challenges the guys in front of him."
