Freshman wins her singles debut and teams with Djokic to claim doubles match
PEORIA, Ill. – Hristina Djokic and Maddie Yergler could not have asked for a better beginning to their collegiate careers.
The DePaul freshmen opened the 2018-19 season racking up a 'W' for the women's tennis program Friday at the Bradley Invitational.
They teamed up for a hard-fought 8-7 doubles victory over Jovana Peric and Paula Veyhle of Northern Illinois that went to six tiebreakers at the David Markin Tennis Courts.
Djokic and Yergler are the only Blue Demons competing at Bradley and advance to face Emma Miceli and Maria Santilli of Cincinnati in Saturday's semifinals.
Miceli and Santilli went to four tiebreakers before prevailing over the Saint Louis doubles team.
Yergler made a second trip to the winner's circle after taking down Ally McKenzie of Saint Louis 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in her first collegiate singles match.
She advances to the semifinals and will be opposed by Bradley's Bozana Lojpur who topped Veyhle 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2.
In Djokic's collegiate debut, the Belgrade, Serbia standout had quite a first set before eventually falling 7-6 (8), 6-4 to Bradley's Sandra Maletin.
Djokic moves to the consolation bracket and will encouonter Brodie Walker from Northern Illinois.
