Blue Demon freshman advances to Bradley Invitational title match
PEORIA, Ill. – Maddie Yergler continued her eye-opening freshman debut Saturday at the Bradley Invitational.
After winning her first collegiate singles and doubles matches 24 hours earlier, Yergler knocked off Bozana Lojpur of Bradley 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals at the David Markin Tennis Courts.
That advances the freshman from Granger, Ind.---home of legendary White Sox broadcaster Ken "Hawk" Harrelson during the baseball season---into Sunday's title match against Cincinnati's Emma Miceli.
It was Miceli who teamed with Maria Santilli in prevailing over Yergler and Hristina Djokic 8-5 in Saturday's doubles semifinals.
Yergler and Djokic wound up falling 8-5 in the third-place match to another Bearcats tandem, Antonella Bramato and Alexia Courtino.
Bramato and Courtino actually won their semifinal match and were supposed to face their fellow Bearcats in Sunday's title match.
Instead, tournament officials paired them against the DePaul doubles team in the third-place match and declared both Cincinnati duos co-champions.
In other singles action, Djokic defeated Brodie Walker of NIU 6-2, 6-2 in a consolation match and will face Cincinnati's Courtino in Sunday's fifth-place showdown.
