Senior forward named to BIG EAST Honor Roll for second week in a row
CHICAGO – At just about the same time the Blue Demons returned to the Associated Press Top 25 national rankings, Mart'e Grays was honored by the BIG EAST for the second week in a row.
Grays was named to the conference honor roll after leading No. 24 DePaul to comeback victories at Georgetown and Villanova over the weekend.
That signified that Grays once again came through with one of the league's top six performances.
Plagued by foul trouble, the 6-foot, 2-inch senior only played five minutes in the first half of last Friday's 69-64 win in Washington.
Trailing by 13 at halftime, the Blue Demons rallied behind Grays' 20 second-half points as she wound up scoring 22 points in just 19 minutes of court time.
DePaul (12-5, 3-2) played catch-up almost the entire second half at Villanova before Grays drained a clutch three-pointer with 48 seconds left to tie it at 55-55 and mandate overtime.
Coach Doug Bruno's team went on to outscore Villanova 11-4 in the extra period for a 66-59 triumph. Grays came away with her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
For the week, the Blue Demon forward averaged 17 points and seven rebounds while hitting a number of big shots at critical times.
Grays tops the team this season at 13.6 points a game and has been excelling in BIG EAST play averaging 17 points a game. She has been a double-figure scorer in nine of the last 10 games.
DePaul resumes BIG EAST action on Friday with a 7 p.m. matchup against St. John's at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
