BIG EAST matchup tips at 2 p.m. Sunday at McGrath-Phillips Arena
CHICAGO – A consistent offensive rhythm is among the most elusive qualities in all of sports.
Just ask any Major League Baseball hitter about the ongoing search to hit that sweet spot on the bat over and over.
Basketball teams at every level go through periods where seemingly every shot is going in and other times when absolutely nothing is going right.
DePaul coach Doug Bruno saw traces of his team's potential offensive ceiling in the latter stages of Friday night's 73-64 BIG EAST victory over Seton Hall.
Now the No. 24/24 Blue Demons have to figure out a way to extend that fluidity for longer stretches in a game beginning with Sunday's 2 p.m. BIG EAST game against Seton Hall at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
The game will be televised by NBC Sports Chicago Plus with Dave Bernhard handling play-by-play alongside analyst Trish Babcock McGraw. It will also be available on the BIG EAST Digital Network via foxsportsgo.com
One thing that will certainly help is a return to form for one of DePaul's greatest all-time perimeter shooters, Ashton Millender. The senior guard was on target in four of six attempts from three-point range against Seton Hall and has the capability of drawing defensive pressure to free up her teammates for more open looks.
Any dangerous outside game must have an inside counterpart, and senior forward Mart'e Grays has been providing that balance this season. Grays has become a consistent scorer in the paint with double figures in nine of her last 11 games.
Leading scorer Chante Stonewall's talent for scoring in close or from afar was on display Friday night as the junior forward scored a game-high 22 points including 4-of-6 from deep. Stonewall and Millender sparked their team to converting nearly 43 percent of its three-pointers (12-of-28).
It helped DePaul continue to lead the nation in three-pointers and three-point attempts. They are second in threes per game, No. 5 in assists, No. 8 in assists per game, No. 9 in free throw percentage, No. 11 in scoring offense (82.3 points a game) and No. 14 in assist-turnover ratio.
Millender is No. 14 in three-point attempts while Campbell is No. 18 in the country in assist-turnover ratio while backcourt mate.
She needs three more connections from long distance to surpass Allie Quigley (248) for third all-time in career three-pointers. Quigley is a WNBA All-Star with the Chicago Sky.
Millender passed up Chanise Jenkins for No. 3 all-time in three-point attempts on Friday. Senior Rebekah Dahlman needs a single point Sunday to become a career 1,000-point scorer.
Seton Hall (11-6, 3-3) comes to McGrath-Phillips Arena after losing 96-60 to No. 14/13 Marquette Friday in Milwaukee. Just before that, the Pirates had knocked off Creighton and Providence.
Shadeen Samuels leads the team in scoring at 17 points a game, rebounding at 9.2 per game and blocked shots with 12. Dangerous three-point threat Nicole Jimenez (52 threes) is averaging 13.1 points and Inja Butina is contributing 10.3.
