Reed’s Double-Double Leads DePaul Past Cornell

Blue Demons win fifth straight game to start 2019-20 season
CHICAGO - Paul Reed posted his third straight double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Jalen Coleman-Lands and Devin Gage scored 12 and 11 points as DePaul cruised to a 75-54 victory over Cornell at Wintrust Arena.
As a team DePaul shot .500 (29-58) from the field, pouring in 40 points in the paint and 20 points off the bench. The Blue Demons out rebounded the Big Red, 42-29, while holding their opponent under 60 points for the fourth time in five games.
DePaul (5-0) grabbed an 11-3 lead less than five minutes into the action as four different players scored early at Wintrust Arena. Three minutes later the DePaul lead was up to 17-7 as Charlie Moore and Reed combined to score 13 of the first 17 points for the Blue Demons.
Cornell would stick around, as the Big Red used a 14-3 run to pull ahead 21-20, but the Blue Demons responded in short order, using their own 10-0 run to move in front 30-21 with just over five minutes on the clock.
After taking a 43-28 lead at halftime, the Blue Demons scored the first four points of the second half as Moore found Romeo Weems in transition for an alley oop. The Blue Demons would keep their foot on the gas pedal and with 14:47 to play DePaul took its first 20-point lead of the game at 53-33.
Just past the midway point of the second half the Blue Demons pushed their lead to 25 points as Markese Jacobs knocked down a three-pointer for the host, putting the game to rest. From that point on the Big Red would not get closer than 20 as DePaul coasted to the win.
Weems turned in a solid all-around game with nine points, eight rebounds, four assists and a steal while Jaylen Butz and Moore scored eight points apiece. Reed added four blocked shots, three assists and two steals to his double-double.
Terrance McBride led Cornell (1-3) with 13 points while Jimmy Boeheim added 12 points.
DePaul returns to action a week from today as the Blue Demons travel to New England for a Noon ET start at Boston College. The game can be seen on ACC Network Extra while WSCR (670 AM) will be the home of the action on the radio.
