Big test for Blue Demons in Maggie Dixon Classic championship game
CHICAGO – It's appropriate that one of the biggest tests of the season for No. 19/20 DePaul comes during finals week.
The Blue Demons will clash with unbeaten No. 16/17 Miami Saturday in the championship game of the Maggie Dixon Classic at McGrath-Phillips Arena following the third-place game between North Carolina A&T and Arkansas State.
The Hurricanes will be the second nationally ranked power coach Doug Bruno's team has faced in the first five games of the 2019-20 schedule.
When the two powers collide at 3:30 p.m., fans will notice a similarity between them. DePaul (3-1) runs a four-guard attack featuring Kelly Campbell, Deja Church, Sonya Morris and Lexi Held. Rounding out the starting five is 6-foot, 1-inch Chante Stonewall who has done yeoman's work excelling both on the perimeter and in the paint.
Miami (4-0) likewise features a four-guard offense built around 6-4 Beatrice Mompremier who leads the team averaging 17.5 points and 8.3 rebounds.
When opponents overplay Mompremier, a talented backcourt of Mykea Gray (13.8 points a game), Kelsey Marshall (13 points) and Endia Banks (11.8 points, 5.3 assists) makes a defense pay.
Stonewall comes into the title tilt leads the Blue Demons with 17.8 points and 7.3 rebounds a game. Sophomore Sonya Morris is scoring at a 16.8 clip while Held is averaging 11.3 points. Church is contributing 10.3 points a game and Campbell 7.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and nearly six assists a game.
Speaking of assists, it was true "DePaulBall" in action Friday when the Blue Demons ran past Arkansas State 109-64 handing out 39 assists on 44 baskets. The 39 assists tied a program record set in 1992 against Cleveland State.
The one thing Bruno reinforces among his players every season is the goal to lead the nation in assists. His team is now averaging nearly 23 assists per game.
While Miami needed a dramatic late comeback to prevail over upset-minded North Carolina A&T 68-67 in the second game on Friday, DePaul cruised behind six players in double figures led by sophomore Jolene Daninger with 16 points off the bench.
A dangerous long-range threat, Daninger hit her first five shots upon entering the game in the first quarter including four from beyond the arc. She finished the opening stanza with 14 points in just five minutes and 26 seconds.
Look for Bruno and his coaching brain trust to design a game plan that will challenge Mompremier while also keeping Miami's talented backcourt in check. Bruno can also go pretty deep into his bench this season with a balanced offense averaging 91.3 points a game.
