Zador and Minsaas unbeaten in singles over the weekend

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – After winning every match the first two days of the Redbird Invitational, DePaul's two-man teams came up a little short in Sunday's finals.

Both Tripp Tuff and Tamas Zador along with the duo of Luuk Wassenaar and Lars Peder Minsaas finished second in the tournament at the Bloomington Tennis Center.

The tournament setup also known as the Davis Cup format has doubles teams competing in one draw. Each match consists of a set of doubles and two singles matches with each result worth one point in best-of-three scoring.

With both Blue Demon tandems dropping their finals doubles matches on Saturday, each needed to sweep the singles to earn a title.

Zador defeated Butler's Drew Michael 6-4, 6-3 but Tuff lost a heartbreaker 6-2, 3-6, 12-10 to Michael Dixon as the Bulldogs emerged with a 2-1 result.

Minsaas upended Illinois State's Pol Botifoli 6-2, 7-6 but his partner Wassenaar fell in a close match to Nam Pham 7-6, 4-6, 10-7 as the host Redbirds won 2-1.

The finals round got underway Saturday with a round of doubles. Both DePaul duos started out with losses as Tuff/Zador dropped a 6-4 decision to Butler's Michael Dickson and Drew Michael while Wassenaar/Minsaas fell 6-3 to ISU's Nam Pham and Pol Botifoli.

For the tournament, Zador and Minsaas each went 5-0 in singles while Tuff and Wassenaar were 4-1. The four Blue Demons all went 2-1 in doubles.

Coach Matt Brothers and his team close out the fall tournament season Friday at the three-day Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis which will also feature the Davis Cup format.
