Rack up two match wins at Gopher Invitational and defeat Notre Dame in doubles

MINNEAPOLIS – DePaul experienced its best day of the fall tournament season Friday at the Gopher Invitational highlighted by a doubles victory over Notre Dame.

The tournament setup also known as the Davis Cup format has doubles teams competing in one draw. Each match consists of a set of doubles and two singles matches with each result worth one point in best-of-three scoring.

Coach Matt Brothers' band overcame both Wisconsin and Drake while taking an early lead against Notre Dame and Wichita State.

The Blue Demons swept Wisconsin 3-0 as Luuk Wassenaar and Tripp Tuff combined to win their doubles match and both singles contests.

In one of the singles matches, a Minnesota player substituted for a Wisconsin player who defaulted. Wassenaar and Tuff took down the Badgers' Robert Krill and Martin Vilela 7-6. Wassenaar followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over substitute Kaleb Dobbs and Tuff knocked off Daniel Nuzhny 6-4, 6-4.

After winning their doubles match to Drake, Chris Casati's singles victory gave DePaul a 2-1 triumph. Casati prevailed over Freddie Powell 6-4, 5-7, 10-3.

In perhaps the best result of the fall season so far, Wassenaar and Tuff defeated Andrew Mariados and Matthew Halpin of Notre Dame 6-4. The four competitors will square off in singles matches on Saturday with DePaul leading 1-0.

Following Wassenaar and Tuff's lead, Spanjaard and Casati began round two with a 6-4 triumph over Wichita State's Rafael Serra and Zach Gruber. All they need is on singles win on Saturday to claim match.
