Morris Honored as BIG EAST Player of the Week

Sophomore guard tied a career high with 29 points in road win against Notre Dame
CHICAGO – After leading No. 16/16 DePaul to its first win over Notre Dame since 2011, Sonya Morris was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday.
Morris highlighted the Blue Demons' 2-0 week with a 29-point showing last Wednesday at the Purcell Pavilion in Notre Dame, Ind. The sophomore guard made 12-of-25 attempts from the field including 5-of-8 from deep while adding six assists, five rebounds and three steals. The five 3-pointers were also a career high.
The St. Louis native scored 20 of her 29 points in the first half, and the game total matched her career high set on Nov. 14 at then-No. 7/6 Oregon State in the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT.
Going into Monday night's showdown with No. 2/2 Connecticut at 7 p.m. at Wintrust Arena, Morris is second on the team in scoring at 16.6 points per game behind only Chante Stonewall (17.1). She has finished in double-figure scoring in four of her last five games.
The second-year standout has been on quite a roll lately. She scored 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting in a victory over Northwestern on Dec. 1 and filled the stat sheet with 18 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals in a win over Milwaukee earlier in the week.
This was Morris' third conference accolade of the season after being selected to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on No. 18 and Dec. 2. Last season she was honored as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.
