DePaul bounces Northwestern in a festive Saturday night at Wintrust Arena
CHICAGO - In the final game of the non-conference schedule Charlie Moore turned in a 25-point, 10-assist double-double and Jaylen Butz finished with a career-high 24 points as DePaul came out on top of a back-and-forth contest by an 83-78 score over Northwestern.
Rounding out the Blue Demons in double-figures, Jalen Coleman-Lands added 13 points on four three-pointers while Paul Reed chipped in with an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double.
After the game Butz, who added eight rebounds and an assist to his 24 points, was honored with the Waldo Fisher-Frank McGrath Award given to the MVP of the annual clash between DePaul and Northwestern. The last Blue Demon to take home the award previous to Butz was Max Strus in 2017.
An early highlight began the action in the South Loop as Moore found Butz for a thunderous alley-oop for DePaul. However, Northwestern would take an early lead as the Wildcats went into the first media timeout leading 8-7.
Out of the stoppage, DePaul found a rhythm as Moore knocked down a three-pointer, giving DePaul their first lead of the game at 10-8. The Blue Demons then forced a shot clock violation, before Moore connected from deep again, extending the hosts' lead to five points at 13-8.
Midway through the first half, the DePaul run was up to 12-0, as the Blue Demons moved in front 15-8 by holding the Wildcats scoreless for six minutes and three seconds. With 9:37 on the clock DePaul took the first double-digit of the game, 20-9, as Romeo Weems connected on a midrange jump shot.
However, over the final 10 minutes of the first half, Northwestern would respond in a big way, outscoring DePaul 16-2 to pull back in front 25-22 with 5:15 left in the first half.
Down the stretch of the first half, Northwestern would build its' lead to six points, but DePaul (12-1) made sure they stayed close, using a slick up and under lay up from Charlie Moore and a tip-in on the offensive boards from Jaylen Butz to go into the half trailing Northwestern 38-34.
Out of a timeout midway through the second half, Moore would bob and weave through traffic, finding room for a scoop layup to push the Blue Demon lead to eight. Northwestern would stick around though and with 10:36 on the game clock, the Wildcats moved back in the lead 53-52.
With Northwestern (5-6) threatening to pull away, DePaul got back-to-back big plays from Butz as the junior big man finished through contact for an old-fashioned three-point play before switching onto a smaller Northwestern player to force a back court violation. On DePaul's next possession, the host pulled within three points, 70-67 as Reed knocked down a three-pointer with 4:27 and then blocked a Wildcat attempt as the shot clock expired.
Moore drilled a step back three-pointers followed by a four-point play from Coleman-Lands that sent Wintrust Arena into an absolute frenzy.
Then, as if the arena couldn't get any louder, Butz finished an emphatic alley-oop and then went coast-to-coast for two points, pushing the DePaul run to 11-0 and giving the host their largest lead of the second half at seven points with 1:33 to play.
Down the stretch Northwestern would pull back within three points at 79-76 but again, in a season so far defined by coming up big in the highest-pressure moments, DePaul delivered with the game on the line. Darious Hall knocked down two clutch free throws with 16.8 on the clock, giving DePaul a four-point lead. Northwestern would score, cutting the lead to three points, but with three seconds on the clock Moore connected on two free throws, bringing the hosts' advantage to five and effectively icing the game.
Northwestern was led by Boo Buie with 25 points and six assists while Miller Kopp added 21 points.
DePaul returns to action on Monday, Dec. 30 as BIG EAST play kicks off with Seton Hall traveling to Wintrust Arena for a 7:30 p.m. tip. The game can be seen on FS1 while on the radio the game can be heard on WIND (560 AM).
