An eventful sixth inning would ultimately make the difference for the Blue Demons in a victory to kick off Hawaii Tournament play.
HONOLULU, HI. - The Blue Demons faced a deficit for a majority of the game until an eventful sixth inning where DePaul jumped ahead and ended up nearly doubling its lead to defeat New Mexico, 9-5, in a come-from-behind win to kick off the Hawaii Invitational Thursday evening. DPU now boasts an overall record of 9-1 to start the season.
New Mexico was the first to plate a runner and took a 1-0 advantage in the second inning.
DePaul would respond in the top of the fourth when Erin Andris singled to shortstop and later scored on a double from Skylor Hilger to even things out 1-1. However, in the bottom of the fourth, UNM would power out homeruns from two different sources to take back the lead, 5-1.
Just when it seemed that DePaul was struggling to spark some momentum, Jessica Cothern changed the game. Cothern launched a two-run homerun, her first bomb of the season, to close in on the deficit, 5-3. Angela Scalzitti, who was walked earlier in the inning, crossed home as a result.
The sixth inning ultimately made the difference for DePaul, as UNM walked four different Blue Demons.
Maranda Gutierrez singled to third base and Scalzitti singled to shortstop. The two each advanced a base on a wild pitch. Cothern was then walked to load up the bases and Cara Jimenez was sent to pinch run for Cothern. Morgan Greenwood was walked, scoring Gutierrez. Madison Fisher was placed as a pinch runner for Greenwood. Kate Polucha grounded out to first to result in an RBI that scored Scalzitti and advanced runners to second and third. Gabby O'Riley and Erin Andris were both walked, scoring Jimenez. Alysia Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to score Fisher, leaving the Blue Demons in a 7-5 advantage to cap off the sixth inning.
DePaul added on two insurance runs in the seventh inning to seal the victory. Scalzitti reached first on a fielding error and advanced to second on a ground out by Cothern. Scalzitti would cross home on a Greenwood single. Greenwood would advance to second on the throw and would end up scoring DePaul's final run of the game thanks to a single from Polucha.
