DePaul riding a late-season BIG EAST surge into Friday night's game
CHICAGO – Closing out a late-season run through the BIG EAST is foremost on the minds of the Blue Demons this weekend.
In today's world of social media, the message to DePaul's student-athletes might be something like: #FinishStrong.
Coach Doug Bruno's program brings a six-game winning streak into Alumni Hall for a 6 p.m. matchup against the BIG EAST's surprise team, Providence. The game can be seen on the BIG EAST Digital Network accessed at foxsportsgo.com
No. 24 DePaul (21-7, 12-4) has been trending upward since a Feb. 3 setback to Marquette at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Over the last six games, Mart'e Grays is averaging nearly 18 points a game while shooting 58 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point range.
Chante Stonewall is averaging more than 13 points game in the same span and shooting 50 percent from the floor. BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Lexi Held scored nearly 13 points a game and shot 36 percent from behind the arc.
During the winning streak, Ashton Millender is averaging more than 10 points a game. The senior guard has made 10 of her last 17 shots including 6-of-13 from deep. Kelly Campbell averaged nearly nine rebounds and five assists in the last six games.
All signs point to the Blue Demons rounding into form as they conclude the BIG EAST and regular season Friday in Providence, R.I. and Sunday in Omaha, Neb. against Creighton.
The offensive rhythm in their up-tempo attack has gained consistency, averaging 82 points and nearly 20 assists per game during the streak. At the same time, their junkyard-dog mentality and hustle has paid off with hard-earned rebounds and 50-50 loose balls.
Bruno's teams traditionally play their best basketball in March, and this current edition appears to be heading in that direction.
DePaul heads into the weekend leading the country in three-pointers and three-point attempts and is second in three-pointers per game and free throw percentage. The Blue Demons are No. 7 in the nation in assists and scoring offense and No. 20 in assist-turnover ratio.
Campbell is No. 10 in the country in assist-turnover ratio and Millender is No. 29 in three-point attempts.
Providence (16-12, 8-8) has been the surprise team of the league and is tied for fourth in the BIG EAST. The Friars could be headed for their highest seed ever in the BIG EAST tournament.
They are led by Preseason All-BIG EAST guard Jovana Nogic who is averaging 13.7 points a game and connecting on nearly 30 percent of her three-pointers. Maddie Jolin is averaging 10.7 points.
Freshman Mary Baskerville averages 8.7 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds. She also leads Providence in blocked shots with 44 and field goal percentage (.557).
