Halvorson Shutout and Vibrant Offense Combine for Victory Over TSU

HOUSTON, TX. - The Blue Demons brought out a fierce combination with Natalie Halvorson on the mound and a vibrant offensive lineup in a 7-0 shutout win against Texas Southern in the first game of the Red and White Showcase.

Halvorson threw her eighth win on the mound this season to continue her perfect record. In her second shutout of the season, Halvorson allowed only four hits from the TSU offense.

In the victory, five different Blue Demons scored at least one run and Jessica Cothern launched her third home run of the season.

DePaul was the first on the board as Maranda Gutierrez singled to third base and then advanced to second on a ground out by Angela Scalzitti. Jessica Cothern stepped up to blast out her third home run of the season to score Gutierrez and put the Blue Demons in an early 2-0 lead.

DePaul pinned on another run in the bottom of the third when Scalzitti reached on a throwing error by the TSU third baseman and advanced to second. Cothern once again owned the plate, blasting out a double deep into right field that scored Scalzitti and widened the lead 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Scalzitti doubled to right center before Cothern was walked. With no outs, Morgan Greenwood singled to load up the bases. Kate Polucha would then blast a double to right center that scored Cothern and Scalzitti and grew the lead before a TSU pitching change was enforced.

Out of the pitching change, Gabby O'Riley grounded out for the RBI that would score Greenwood. With Polucha on second, Taylor Young grounded out to advance Polucha to third. Alysia Rodriguez was walked and then was thrown out at second on the fielder's choice that would score Polucha to grow the lead to 7-0.

Halvorson held off the Texas Southern offense for the remainder of the game.

DePaul will play one more Friday game at 6:00 p.m. this evening against tournament host Houston. Live stats will be available.
