DePaul will compete in both the Benedictine Relays and Illini Twilight this weekend
CHICAGO – Splitting up their forces to compete in two meets this weekend, the DePaul track squad will head to the Illini Twilight while the Blue Demon throwers travel to compete in the Benedictine Relays.
The Benedictine Relays are a two-day meet that will be held on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13 in Lisle, a western suburb. Throwing events are scheduled to kick off at 12:00 p.m. CT with the hammer throw.
Coming off the Gibson Relays in Terre Haute, Ind., junior thrower Rebecca Chouinard set a new PR in the hammer with a distance of 56.07 meters, which was good for bronze. Fellow thrower Dylan Marshall took home silver in the javelin with an impressive 42.68-meter throw.
William Hauser stood atop the podium as he threw a near-career-best 57.28 meters in the javelin to claim the top spot over competitors from Bradley, BIG EAST rival Butler, Eastern Illinois, Valparaiso and others. His throw ranks him in the top five competitors within the conference.
Friday will see the hammer throw and shot put competitions. Saturday's events will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will see the discus and javelin in action.
Meanwhile, downstate in Champaign-Urbana, the Fighting Illini will host the Illini Twilight where many Blue Demons saw success last year, including a new program record.
Breaking his own school record at the Illinois Track Stadium, senior Brian Mada leaped to a record distance of 15.75 meters in the triple jump to take home gold. Mada would go on to break the record for a third time at the NCAA Championships with a 15.89-meter mark.
Returner Kiersten Walker also saw top performances at the meet last season. Walker posted two first-place finishes in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. She continued her success last week at the Gibson Invite to earn the top spot for the second meet in a row with an impressive 55.17 finish in the 400-meter dash.
Newcomers Isabel Ingram, Lorie Cashdollar and Henry Larkin also ended up with podium performances and look to build upon their successes so far this season.
Field events at the Illini Twilight are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. with the hammer throw. The 3,000-meter steeplechase will kick off the track portion at 4:00 p.m. CT.
