Blue Demons come up short in deciding game three of finals series
CHICAGO - Devin Gage matched his career high with 19 points, but 10 three-pointers proved the difference for USF as the Bulls took the deciding game three, 77-65, to win the CBI tournament on Friday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena. Max Strus finished with 16 points while Femi Olujobi chipped in with a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double.
The Blue Demons combined to shoot just .200 (4-20) from three-point range during the game. DePaul (19-17) recorded 21 points off turnovers and 16 points in the paint, but the difference in three-point shooting was too much to overcome down the stretch.
USF (24-14) ran out to a 10-5 lead early, but DePaul would stay close, using two three-pointers by Gage to pull within 10-8 with 15:05 to play in the opening half. USF would keep the pressure on, and midway through the half a 12-5 run from the Bulls pushed the visitor advantage to nine at 22-13.
Down the stretch of the first half USF would push their lead to 17 but DePaul had an answer as the host exploded on a 14-2 run to close the half, cutting the deficit to five points, 39-34, going into the intermission.
The Blue Demons kept their foot on the gas pedal scoring six of the first eight points of the second half to pull within one, but USF quickly responded and with 13:12 to go in the game the lead was back to eight points at 50-42. Five minutes later the deficit stood at six as DePaul's Olujobi converted on back-to-back free throws with eight minutes left in the game.
The Blue Demons would not get any closer as USF pushed their lead to as many as 14 points in the final five minutes. DePaul would pull within seven points with 1:06 to play but could not get any closer as the Bulls held on to win the game.
David Collins led the Bulls with 19 points and was named the most valuable player of the CBI.
Paul Reed totaled 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Strus added six boards to his 16 points.
