Nolan, Chouinard Earn Gold on Day One of BIG EAST Outdoor Championships

NEW YORK – Senior Jade Nolan and junior Rebecca Chouinard capture the first Blue Demon victories at the 2019 BIG EAST Track & Field Outdoor Championships presented by Jeep. Through the first day of competition, the women's squad is tied for third place along with St. John's and the men stand in fifth among conference competitors.
Nolan, who currently holds the school record in the outdoor triple jump, marked a 5.90-meter long jump to take the crown. She matched her PR to gain the top spot on the podium. The Milwaukee native brought home the title for the first time since 2015. Joining the senior was Sydnee Matthew who earned silver in the event with an impressive 5.79-meter mark that flirted with her 5.80-meter PR.
Continuing success on the women's side was Chouinard in the hammer throw competition. The St. Thomas, Ontario native launched a 56.05-meter distance for the crown. This mark also flirted with her PR that stands at 56.07 meters. Also earning a spot on the podium was fellow thrower Dylan Marshall in the javelin throw. She threw a 41.58-meter mark to claim bronze in the event and add to the point total for the Blue Demons.
On the men's side, junior Dominic Marshall threw a 49.74-meter distance in the hammer throw that was good for a podium finish, taking home the bronze. Fellow thrower Will Hauser also earned bronze in the javelin throw with a final mark of 57.75 meters.
Freshman Henry Larkin clocked in a time of 47.67 in the preliminary rounds of the 400-meter dash. The Oakland native has placed first in every race as a Blue Demon. Also qualifying for the finals tomorrow were Brendan van Voorhis (47.94) and Isaac Walker (48.94) who finished in third and fifth, respectively.
Also earning the top spot in the qualifying events, Alexia Brooks had the top time in the 100-meter hurdles with a final time of 13.62. Adam Nelson claimed the top spot in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.81 to tie his season-best that was set at the Gibson Invitational last month.
In the men's 400-meter hurdles, newcomer Ashton Colaire posted the best time of the day with a 53.91 finish to set a new PR in the event. Finishing close behind in second place was senior standout Kyle Decker with a 53.95 finish. They were joined by fellow Blue Demon hurdler Kyle Casper (55.59).
Other finals qualifiers included Kiersten Walker (24.40) and Laura Edwards (25.03) in the 200-meter dash; Walker (55.26), Edwards (56.35) and Rutendo Chimbaru (56.82) in the 400-meter dash; Miranda Rea (4:46.30) in the 1500-meter run; Isabel Ingram (14.12) and Kaitlen Crawford (14.68) in the 100-meter hurdles; Crawford (1:03.05) and Ingram (1:03.91) in the 400-meter hurdles; Kolani Cole (10.89) and Tony Pavloski (10.96) in the 100-meter dash; Brendan van Voorhis (21.67), Isaac Walker (21.85) and Cole (22.20) in the 200-meter dash; van Voorhis (47.94) and Walker (48.94) in the 400-meter dash; and Charlie McIntyre (4:02.57) in the 1500-meter run.
The second-and-final day of the championships begins Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the women's discus and the track events are scheduled to begin with the 4x100-meter relay at 11 a.m. CT.
An awards ceremony is tentatively scheduled for 2:45 p.m. and will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi. The broadcast, which begins at 10:55 a.m., can be found on Caffeine.TV and on the BIG EAST's Twitter account (@BIGEAST).
