8/30/2019 9:34:00 AM | MEN'S SOCCER
CHICAGO - The DePaul men's soccer team kicks off the 2019 season Friday with the beginning of the Chicago Classic, hosted by Loyola-Chicago. They will face Northern Illinois at 4:00 p.m. in their regular season opening match at Wish Field before hosting a contest against Vermont on Sunday at noon.
The Blue Demons enter 2019 with head coach Mark Plotkin and assistant coaches Tyler Keever and Cole Bushue beginning their second season at DePaul. Following a 5-9-2 overall season in 2018, the program returns eight starters including goalkeeper Drew Nuelle and 17 players with the addition of seven freshman and two transfers. Senior defender Max de Bruijne was named Preseason All-BIG EAST by the conference earlier this month. DePaul was picked to finish ninth in the league.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Northern Illinois concluded the 2018 season with a 8-9-1 mark, good enough to make the MAC tournament but fell in the first round to Western Michigan. This season, they've posted a 1-1-1 mark in preseason, also competing against Detroit Mercy, alike the Blue Demons. The Huskies have 18 players returning along with six newcomers to begin the 2019 campaign.
SERIES STUFF
The Huskies hold the advantage in this series, 2-6-3. The two haven't met since 2017 where NIU came out on top, 3-2. DePaul's last victory over NIU came in 2004 on Wish Field.
SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS
Vermont takes the trip west to the Windy City to kick off their regular season against Loyola Friday evening before playing on Wish Field on Sunday. The Catamounts welcome the addition of a dozen newcomers to the program. They were picked to finish fifth in the America East Preseason Coaches' Poll.
SERIES STUFF
This is the first matchup between the two teams.
