Dynamic duo among top candidates nationwide for Senior CLASS Award
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – No. 14/15 DePaul's standout senior tandem of Kelly Campbell and Chante Stonewall are among the 60 NCAA® men's and women's basketball student-athletes who were selected Friday as candidates for the 2019-20 Senior CLASS Award®.
Candidates must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Campbell leads the nation in assist-turnover ratio and is among the top 10 in overall assists. The 5-foot, 10-inch point guard is fourth all-time at DePaul in career assists and No. 7 in rebounding along with being one of only three players to ever record a triple-double.
Her combination of character, community service and dedication to helping others earned her recognition in one of the sports world's most prestigious honors. She was a semifinalist for the John Wooden Citizen Cup Award open to all male and female collegiate and pro athletes.
She spent parts of two summers working at orphanages for abandoned and at-risk children in Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. It was such a fulfilling experience that the second year, Campbell returned as the leader of the nine student-athletes participating.
Here's a revealing glimpse into Campbell's character. She has quietly gone off on her own numerous times to work at the St. Vincent de Paul Church food pantry to help feed the homeless. She never tells anybody she is going. Campbell said she does not want to make a big deal out of something we all should be doing.
In addition to the service trips to Central America, Campbell has volunteered for Special Olympics sports clinics, Special Olympics All-Sports Day, the Special Olympics 50th anniversary celebration and Day of Inclusion at Soldier Field.
She has also cooked food at the Sheffield Garden Walk to raise funds for St. Vincent de Paul, worked the Misericordia Home candy drive, the Chicago Park District Fitness Fest for underprivileged children, Hoops in the Hood and St. Vincent de Paul Service Day. For four years, Campbell has made blankets for underprivileged children at the St. Vincent de Paul Day Care Center and has also worked as a Chicago Marathon volunteer.
In the classroom, Campbell is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection with a 3.78 GPA. She is also a three-time recipient of the Shirley Becker Academic Award. She is a Dean's List and DePaul Athletics Honor Roll student.
Stonewall is the Blue Demons' leading scorer averaging more than 18 points a game and is No. 7 in the nation in field goals, No. 14 in steals and No. 22 in scoring. All that while also playing at the point of DePaul's vaunted full-court press that is forcing nearly 23 turnovers a game. Her dramatic, game-winning three-point play with five seconds left last season lifted DePaul to a repeat BIG EAST tournament title with a one-point victory over Marquette.
The 6-1 forward is a worthy role model for children and enjoyed working with them last summer as a counselor at a day camp based out of DePaul. She has the kind of engaging personality and genuine affection for people that made her the most popular counselor in the camp. Stonewall is the kind of young lady who would not hesitate to help someone in need. As a team leader, she has the presence and character that inspires her teammates to achieve beyond their limits.
It's no surprise Stonewall has volunteered for Special Olympics sports clinics, Special Olympics All-Sports Day and the Special Olympics 50th anniversary celebration and Day of Inclusion at Soldier Field.
For four years, Stonewall has made blankets for underprivileged children at the St. Vincent de Paul Day Care Center and has also worked as a Chicago Marathon volunteer.
Stonewall is a dedicated student who competes in the classroom as ferociously as on the court. She is a Dean's List and DePaul Athletics Honor Roll scholar with a 3.59 GPA. Stonewall is a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team and a three-time recipient of the Shirley Becker Academic Award.
The men's and women's candidates will be narrowed to two fields of 10 finalists in February, and those names will be placed on the official ballot.
