Defeat Western Michigan 5-2 for new coach Arce's first dual-match win
CHICAGO – The Blue Demon women's tennis team made a little history on Friday night at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
Sweeping all three doubles matches and capturing four singles matches resulted in a 5-2 victory over Western Michigan for new coach Marisa Arce's first dual-match win at DePaul.
It was a splendid way to open the dual season as the doubles teams of Hristina Djokic/Marija Jovicic, Alina Kuzmenkova/Aspasia Avgeri and Lenka Antonijevic/Yuliya Kizelbasheva secured the doubles point in dominant fashion.
Antonijevic won the opening singles match for a quick 2-0 Blue Demon lead with a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Kaitlyn Rogosch. After Western MIchigan scored a point at No. 1 singles, Kizelbasheva put the home team ahead 3-1 after defeating Kristina Tiraspolsky 7-5, 6-1.
Djokic fell short at No. 6 reducing DePaul's lead to one point. That's when Jovicic came through with the clinching point after a 6-2, 7-5 win over Lindsey Zieglar. Avgeri tallied the final point rallying to beat Gabriela Slavova 4-6, 6-2, 6-2
Arce and her team will be out for a weekend sweep when they return to Lakeshore Sport & Fitness on Sunday for a tough 3 p.m. match against Illinois State which advanced to the NCAA tournament last year.
