Women's tennis tops Illinois State 7-0 at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness
CHICAGO – Everything came up a winner for women's tennis on Sunday.
The Blue Demons swept to their second dual victory in as many matches with a 7-0 triumph over an Illinois State team that advanced to the NCAA tournament last year.
The Sunday sweep at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness began with a doubles dominance as the tandems of Lenka Antonijevic/Yuliya Kizelbasheva, Aspasia Avgeri/Alina Kuzmenkova and Hristina Djokic/Marija Jovicic won their matches.
Antonijevic and Kizelbasheva along with Djokic and Jovicic each won their doubles completion 6-3 and Avgeri and Kuzmenkova prevailed 6-4.
Kuzmenkova won at No. 1 singles 6-4, 7-5 and Avgeri toughed out a demanding win at No. 2 singles 7-6 (3), 4-6, 10-6. In contrast, Kizelbasheva cruised at No. 3 by a score of 6-1, 6-2. The freshman from Russia has now won six matches in a row.
Jovicic won her first set at No. 4 7-6 (3) and was the awarded the match when her opponent Jelena Karla Vujicic could not continue because of an injury. At No. 5, Antonijevic upended her Redbird opponent 6-1, 6-3 and Djokic followed up at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-3 result.
DePaul (2-0) and coach Marisa Arce will take on the Big Ten's Michigan State next Sunday at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
