Coach Matt Brothers' team takes down Creighton 6-1 on Friday
OMAHA, Neb. – These Blue Demons bounced back in a big way on Friday and showed plenty of heart on a day when that is so in vogue.
After nearly a clean sweep of the singles slate, DePaul won its BIG EAST opener with a 6-1 victory over Creighton at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The day began with DePaul (3-5) locking up the doubles point behind the tandems of Boris Spanjaard and Christopher Casati and Tamas Zador and Vito Tonejc.
Tonejc dropped the only singles match at No. 1, but his five teammates carried the day in style. Casati and Spanjaard showed their grit and determination with three-set victories.
Casati outlasted Creighton's Jose Oscar Diaz 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, rallying from a tough opening set at the No. 5 singles position. His doubles partner Spanjaard prevailed at No. 2 in a grueling 6-7 (2-7), 6-6, 6-4 thriller over Stratton Brown.
"Our guys implemented a lot of things in their matches today that we have been working on hard in practice," said DePaul coach Matt Brothers. "I am proud of our fight and total team effort against a talented Creighton team.
"The guys played great today, and still have room for improvement."
Spanjaard and his teammates will get a chance to show just that on Saturday when they take on Wichita State in a neutral-court match on Drake's home court in Des Moines, Iowa.
