Blue Demons top Georgetown 87-69 for sixth win in a row
WASHINGTON, D.C – Right here in our Nation's Capital in the land of the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, No. 12/12 DePaul added to its reputation as the best in the BIG EAST.
Friday night's 87-69 victory over Georgetown in McDonough Arena brought the Blue Demons (25-3, 15-1) the outright BIG EAST regular-season title and a No. 1 seed in the conference tournament March 6-9 at Wintrust Arena.
Their sixth win in a row materialized behind Sonya Morris with 22 points including 15 in the second quarter along with nine rebounds. Chante Stonewall added 20 points and four steals while Deja Church scored 11. Maya Stovall scored a career-high 11 points and Kelly Campbell had six points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.
DePaul made just two of its first 10 shots after the opening tip. Campbell hit a three and Morris a jumper in the paint for a 9-5 lead at the first quarter media timeout.
After the Hoyas had drawn within 11-8, the Blue Demons closed out the first quarter on an 11-2 run as Held, Campbell and Kiara Dallmann all connected from behind the arc and Stonewall cashed in inside for a 22-11 advantage. DePaul was 4-of-9 from deep in the first 10 minutes.
The break didn't cool off coach Doug Bruno's long-range shooters. Morris and Church hit back-to-back threes, forcing Hoyas coach James Howard to call timeout with his team trailing 30-13. DePaul was now 6-of-11 from three-point land.
Georgetown (5-21, 2-13) scored the first two points of the second quarter and then it was all DePaul. A pair of Morris long-distance bombs and a jumper fueled a decisive 16-0 run as the visiting team forged a 38-13 lead.
The Hoyas scored seven in a row and the Blue Demons responded with a 12-0 burst as Morris dropped in two more jumpers.
Who else but the explosive sophomore from St. Louis closed out a magnificent second quarter with a pair of free throws as her 15 points in 10 minutes and 17 in the first half staked her team to a 54-22 lead at intermission. Stonewall and Church each added nine points while Dallmann and Stovall gave Bruno quality minutes off the bench.
Stonewall and Morris continued the assault that culminated with a pretty Lexi Held-to-Morris-to-Stonewall passing sequence with a layup increasing the margin to 72-31 at the third quarter media timeout. Stonewall had nine points in the first five minutes of the quarter.
With all of DePaul's starters on the bench, the Blue Demons finished the third quarter with an 80-45 lead.
Bruno & Co. now head to the Philadelphia area for a Sunday matinee against Villanova in legendary Wildcats coach Harry Perretta's final home game of an illustrious 42-year career.
