Blue Demons shoot season-worst 2-of-24 from three-point range
VILLANOVA, Pa. – It was a Sunday filled with emotions for No. 12/12 DePaul, beginning with Villanova's pre-game Senior Day ceremony and finishing with a heart-felt postgame tribute to legendary Wildcat coach Harry Perretta after the final home game of his legendary 42-year career.
It didn't help the cause that DePaul had its worst three-point shooting performance of the season in a 76-58 loss to Villanova at Finneran Pavilion. The Blue Demons were just 2-of-24 from deep.
Chante Stonewall led DePaul with 16 points and Dee Bekelja scored 14. Lexi Held finished with nine points, Sonya Morris eight and Deja Church seven.
Maddy Siegrist scored a game-high 29 points and added 13 rebounds. Cameron Onken posted a triple-double with 12 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists as the Wildcats wanted to send off their coach with a win.
DePaul fell to 25-4, 15-2 in the BIG EAST and Villanova improved to 16-11, 10-6.
It didn't look good opening the fourth quarter trailing by 10. The Wildcats opened up a 68-51 lead at the fourth quarter media timeout on the strength of a 10-2 run.
Siegrist was hurting the Blue Demons inside, and kept that up the entire game. The Wildcats maintained their advantage and led 75-58 late in the fourth quarter.
Down 33-30 at halftime, DePaul watched Held score the first eight points of the third quarter in bringing her team even at 37-37. Villanova came back with a 7-0 run and led 44-37 at the third quarter media timeout. The Blue Demons were 1-of-15 from deep.
It was 48-37 when Held and Stonewall cut the deficit to 48-41. Villanova closed out the quarter on a 5-2 burst to lead 53-43 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Both teams went right at one another from the opening tip. Maddy Siegrist was scoring inside for Villanova while Stonewall hit four of her first five shots. It was 10-10 at the first quarter media timeout.
You could feel the intensity from players on both sides. This game meant a little more than your usual BIG EAST matchup.
The Wildcats made the first extended strike with a 10-0 burst in building an 18-10 lead. Back came the Blue Demons with a 9-2 run and it was 20-19 after the first quarter. Stonewall had 10 points in the first 10 minutes.
After a Bekelja free throw tied it up to open the second quarter, the Wildcats struck for six-straight and led 26-20 at the media timeout. DePaul was just 1-of-11 from behind the arc for the game at that point, missing its first seven shots of the quarter.
A pair of Church free throws and a Morris basket brought their team within 28-24 before Villanova pulled out to a 33-24 advantage---the largest of the first half. The Blue Demons closed out the second quarter on a 6-0 run behind baskets by Dee Bekelja and Stonewall followed by a pair of Church foul shots.
DePaul was just 1-of-13 from three-point range in the first half and still trailed just 33-30 at the break. Stonewall had 12 points and Church scored seven.
The Blue Demons get a week to recuperate and prepare for next Sunday's BIG EAST regular-season finale at Marquette.
