BIG EAST regular-season champion faces Villanova on Sunday
VILLANOVA, Pa. – The BIG EAST champion Blue Demons will be venturing into an unnerving environment Sunday when the No. 12/12-ranked team takes on talented freshman Maddy Siegrist and Villanova at high noon.
For starters, standout seniors Mary Gedaka and Bridget Herlihy will be honored before the game on Senior Day.
As if that wasn't enough to get the Wildcat motors racing, there will also be a multitude of Villanova fans filling up the Finneran Pavilion stands in anticipation of the final home game for their beloved, legendary coach Harry Perretta and his iconic 42-year career.
DePaul coach Doug Bruno and his staff will have their hands full managing the in-game nuances and strategies while also encouraging the Blue Demons to maintain their poise in all the noise.
More than likely, Sunday's game that's being shown on the BIG EAST Digital Network won't be anything like the first time these two adversaries met back on Jan. 24 in McGrath-Phillips Arena.
 Â
That's when sophomore Sonya Morris went off for a career-high 30 points including 5-of-12 from three-point range while adding six rebounds, five assists and five steals in an 85-69 victory. The Blue Demons outscored Villanova by a combined 53-30 in the first and third quarters.
Lexi Held added 21 points and Chante Stonewall's aggressive defense on Siegrist limited the BIG EAST's second-leading scorer to just four points in the first half and 11 after three quarters.
Bruno will be hoping for a similar effort from his senior co-captain who leads DePaul (25-3, 15-1) in scoring at 17.5 points a game while her team-leading 66 steals are a big reason she heads up the Blue Demons' vaunted full-court press.
Stonewall & Co. come into Sunday's game second in the nation in scoring (85.5 points per game) and three-pointers and third in assists and turnover margin. They are also fourth in steals, fifth in assist-turnover ratio, seventh in free throw percentage and No. 9 in turnovers forced at nearly 22 per game.
Senior point guard and co-captain Kelly Campbell leads the country in assist-turnover ratio and is fifth in total assists. Stonewall is No. 7 in field goals and No. 18 in scoring.
At 25-3, DePaul is four wins shy of equaling the all-time program record of 29 wins in a season set by the Sweet 16 teams of 2010-11 and 2013-14.
Along with Siegrist, the Blue Demons will look to keep the talented Gedaka in check. The 6-foot, 1-inch forward is averaging 17.4 points a game and is second on the team in scoring and assists.
They will also keep a close eye on the 6-2 Herlihy who is averaging nearly nine points a game and leads the team with 45 blocked shots.
