Blue Demons close out BIG EAST season Sunday in Milwaukee
CHICAGO – The modus operandi of No. 16/15 DePaul generally calls for coach Doug Bruno's program to come out strong following a loss.
It has already happened three times this season. After their very first setback at Oregon State, the Blue Demons bounced back in a big way with a 109-64 triumph over Arkansas State. DePaul had six players in double figures and drilled 16 three-pointers.
Two days after being upset by Creighton 63-61, Kelly Campbell's second career triple-double on Super Bowl Sunday sparked her team to a resounding 93-71 victory over Providence. A loss to Connecticut was followed by an 83-76 win over Loyola
With five days to regroup and recalibrate the nation's third-leading offense following last Sunday's loss at Villanova, look for Bruno & Co. to finish up the regular season on a high note.
Whether it's the astute coaching staff, the indomitable will of the players or some combination of both, BIG EAST regular-season champion DePaul (25-4, 15-2) has not lost back-to-back games in four years. It was on Dec. 10 and 15 of 2016 that the Blue Demons fell to Notre Dame and Temple.
Watch for the Blue Demons' versatile and multi-talented starting five to take the lead on Sunday when they collide with second-place Marquette at 2 p.m. before a FS2 national TV audience and the rowdy partisans at the Al McGuire Center.
Chante Stonewall, Campbell, Sonya Morris, Lexi Held and Deja Church have combined to average 67 points a game for a national power averaging 84.6. That means practically 80 percent of the DePaul's offensive output emanates from the starting five.
At the point of attack when DePaul has the ball and also when it is trying to take it away, Stonewall spearheads a high-pressure, full-court press that is forcing nearly 22 turnovers a game. After playing 94 feet of relentless defense, the 6-foot, 1-inch senior has enough energy and drive to average 17.5 points a game.
Campbell is the linchpin of Lincoln Park's finest, playing a key role on defense as the 5-10 senior point guard matches up and acquits herself well against an opponent's most physical inside player.
At the other end, Campbell is a facilitator and caretaker extraordinaire, using her heady basketball IQ and flawless decision-making to lead the nation in assist-turnover ratio and rank fifth in assists. She does her best to set up the other four starters with golden opportunities to cash in with open looks. In BIG EAST play, Campbell is averaging 8.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 6.1 assists.
Church, Morris and Held are multi-dimensional scorers who make it extremely difficult for an opposing defense to focus on one or two key scoring options.
Marquette comes into the final game of the regular season at 21-7 and 12-5 in the BIG EAST---good for second place. The Golden Eagles are battling Butler and Villanova for the second seed in the BIG EAST tournament behind DePaul.
Selena Lott is their top player averaging 14.8 points a game and leading the team in assists and steals. Lauren Van Kleunen is averaging 11 points a game and Isabelle Spingola is scoring 10.6 points a game and leading Marquette with 68 three-pointers and a .395 percentage from deep.
