Long battle late into Thursday night results in 5-2 BIG EAST setback
MILWAUKEE – They battled late into Thursday night, a long and highly competitive struggle that included three singles matches that went the distance.
When the last volley was finished at the Helfaer Tennis & Recreation Center, DePaul had dropped its BIG EAST opener 5-2 to host Marquette.
The defending BIG EAST champion Blue Demons won the No. 1 doubles match as Lenka Antonijevic and Yuliya Kizelbasheva defeated Marquette's Fleur Eggink and Natalija Popovic 7-6.
But the visiting team could not duplicate that success at No. 2 and No. 3 as the Golden Eagles took an early lead with the doubles point.
Aspasia Avgeri gave Eggink her second loss of the night with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 1 singles. Also scoring for DePaul (4-7, 0-1) was Lenka Antonijevic at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Isabella Franks.
But Marquette (6-5, 2-0) came out on top in the other four singles contests to remain undefeated in BIG EAST play.
Coach Marisa Arce and her team will shoot for their first conference victory on Sunday when they return home to Lakeshore Sport & Fitness for a 4 p.m. match against Xavier.
