Junior wins clinching match in 4-3 BIG EAST victory over Xavier
CHICAGO – DePaul's opportunity to rack up its first BIG EAST win came down to the final match on Sunday.
With the score deadlocked at 3-3, Alina Kuzmenkova competed on the Lakeshore Sport & Fitness court and came through in the clutch with a 7-6, 7-6 victory over Anna Roggenburk at No. 2 singles.
The 4-3 result also signified the first BIG EAST win for new Blue Demons coach Marisa Arce.
How did we get there? DePaul's improvement to 5-7 and 1-1 in conference began on the doubles courts where the No. 1 tandem of Lenka Antonijevic and Yuliya Kizelbasheva picked up a victory. Combined with the Hristina Djokic/Marija Jovicic success in the No. 3 slot, the Blue Demons took an early 1-0 lead.
Kizelbasheva followed up with a win at No. 3 singles for a 2-0 advantage. Xavier (5-7, 0-2) prevailed at No. 1 singles to cut its deficit in half.
Maddie Yergler came through at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Anna Letto and the Blue Demons led 3-1. It got a little unsettling when the Musketeers won the next two singles matches.
That's when Kuzmenkova stepped up and clinched it for the home team.
The Blue Demons will travel to the state next-door next Sunday and take on the Big Ten's Indiana in Bloomington.
