Blue Demons Edged by UNI in Extra Innings

CHICAGO - DePaul softball entered their final day of competition at the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic strong, but DePaul would fall 7-6 in the eighth inning to a Northern Iowa Panther walk-off in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
DePaul came out swinging taking a early 3-0 lead in the first. Junior center fielder Angela Scalzitti singled before third baseman Erin Andris launched her second home-run of the season to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore designated player Gabby O'Riley doubled to score Gutierrez to tack on the third run.
Senior pitcher Krista Dalgarn started for DePaul in the circle, pitching for five innings, recording three strikeouts and walking three. Halvorson replaced Dalgarn in the sixth inning.
The score would remain 3-0 in favor of DePaul until the top of the sixth when UNI gave up two bases loaded walks on two outs to score sophomore second baseman Skylor Hilger and Scalzitti. The Blue Demons wouldn't hold on to the 5-0 lead for long as UNI standout Sammey Bunch hit a three-run homer to cut DePaul's lead to two. The Panthers tied the game up, going into the seventh inning tied at 5-5.
Sophomore pitcher Erin Hocker would take Halvorson's place in the seventh with two outs before striking out Bunch looking.
Freshman left fielder Tori Meyer was placed at second at the start of extra innings and scores off an Andris single giving DePaul a one run lead, but the Panthers would tie and walk the game off in the bottom of the eighth inning.
DePaul will head straight into game two of their doubleheader against Drake.
