CHICAGO - DePaul softball (2-3) struggled right off the bat as they headed into their second game of the day in the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic against Drake, falling 9-0 in five innings.
Junior shortstop Maranda Gutierrez had DePaul's lone hit of the game in the second inning. Junior pitcher Natalie Halvorson started in the circle making her second appearance of the day and held the Bulldogs scoreless through two.
Drake had six runs by the end of the third, partly due to freshman Emily Valtmann's three-run homerun.
The fourth inning and top of the fifth would see each team's at bat retired in order until the bottom of the fifth when Valtmann hit her second three-run homer to take a 9-0 lead and run-rule the game.
Sophomore pitcher Erin Hocker (0-1) came on in relief in the third inning, recording two strikeouts. Halvorson (1-2) would get the loss.
