CHICAGO - DePaul men's soccer goalkeeper Brian Schwake has signed a professional contract with Livingston FC - a premier football club in Scotland.Â
Schwake was on the team during the 2019 season and officially signed with the club on Saturday. The Mt. Prospect, Ill. native did not see any time on the field during the regular season but did play against Detroit in a preseason exhibition match and netted five saves.Â
Â
"I'm definitely really excited," Schwake said. "It will be hard to be away from home and everything, but I can't wait to see what the future holds."Â
DePaul men's soccer head coach Mark Plotkin is excited to see Schwake's dream come into fruition.Â
"We are all extremely proud of Brian for realizing his dream and signing his first professional contract," Plotkin said. "Livingston FC plays in the top division in Scotland against world renowned competition like Rangers and Celtic. This is a fantastic opportunity for Brian and [we] know he will continue to develop into a first class professional goalkeeper.
"Brian grew up training in a great environment with Sockers FC and under goalkeeping coach Neil Thompson. Brian's work ethic, drive, and competitiveness were apparent during the recruiting process and in his time here at DePaul. It was no surprise to me when Livingston FC offered Brian a contract and while we are sad to see Brian leave Lincoln Park, we are excited for his future. We wish him the best of luck."
Schwake has been training with their goalkeeping coach Tony Caigy and is looking forward to the future.Â
"I chose Livingston because it's an up and coming club with a very bright future," he said. "In addition to this, [Caigy] is a very experienced coach and it's been great learning with him so far."
"I will definitely miss DePaul. It was a very fun couple of months with a fantastic group of guys. Being on the team definitely helped me because fighting for a spot kept me motivated to get better every day which was very beneficial for my development."
He is the first men's soccer player to sign a professional contract since Simon Megally (2013-16) played for Nybro IF in Denmark in 2017. Mack Robinson (2014-15) signed professionally with North Carolina FC in 2016 and is currently playing for the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL.
