CHICAGO - DePaul softball narrowly dropped their final game of the Saluki Invitational on Sunday afternoon to Western Illinois, 4-3, in Carbondale, Ill. The result pushes the Blue Demons to 8-12 on the season with one more tournament remaining before conference play begins.
DePaul had three hits in the first two innings courtesy of sophomore Gabby O'Riley, Angela Scalzitti and Jessica Cothern but couldn't make their way across the plate. Western Illinois tallied the first two runs of the game from a 2 RBI homerun from Tori Boysen.
The Blue Demons answered with two runs of their own in the third. Junior Maranda Gutierrez led off with a single to center field and advanced to third off senior Kate Polucha's single to right center. Gutierrez scored and Polucha advanced to third on a passed ball. Polucha scored on a Gabby O'Riley groundout and the score was tied heading into the fourth inning.
Freshman Grace Frazier walked before scoring on a Gutierrez left center double giving them a 3-2 advantage but Western Illinois added two more runs in the fifth inning and the Blue Demons couldn't find a way to top the Leathernecks.
Sophomore transfer Erin Hocker (0-3) took the loss for DePaul.
UP NEXT
DePaul will head into their final non-conference tournament tournament weekend March 13-15 in California. The Blue Demons will face the likes of UC Santa Barbara, CSUN, Wagner, Iowa State and LMU.
