Blue Demons add Big Ten transfers Fredrickson, Allen
CHICAGO – Coach Doug Bruno and his coaching staff have strengthened No. 15/14 DePaul with a pair of Big Ten transfers heading to Lincoln Park.
Shoring up the BIG EAST champion's inside game will be 6-foot, 2-inch forward Courtney Fredrickson from Wisconsin and 6-1 Jorie Allen from Indiana.
Fredrickson will be a graduate student and eligible immediately for the Blue Demons while the freshman Allen will sit out a year due to NCAA regulations and will be eligible for three seasons.
Fredrickson battled through an injury that sidelined her after the first two games of the 2018-19 season until Jan. 16 of 2020. The Badger forward has played 16 games in the last two seasons.
In her last healthy season (2017-18), Fredrickson started 20 of 30 games averaging nearly nine points a game and finishing in double figures 15 times including six games in a row in December of 2017. She had four double-doubles including a career-high 18 points along with 14 rebounds against Minnesota.
Fredrickson was a four-star recruit out of Minnetonka (Minn.) High School and rated No. 93 in the country by Prospect Nation. The two-time All-Stater led the Skippers to the 2016 AAAA state title and finished her career with 1,803 points and 1,043 rebounds.
"It was really important to me to join a program with a history of success and an outstanding coach that I can learn, grow, and develop from while giving me the freedom to play my best basketball," Fredrickson said. "DePaul gives me the ability to pursue a masters in sports marketing to help launch my career in the city of Chicago with all of the connections it has to offer.
"I'm really looking forward to all that DePaul has to offer me both on and off the court."
She will have an opportunity to immediately help fill the void left behind by graduating honorable mention All-American and All-BIG EAST senior Chante Stonewall and All-BIG EAST senior Kelly Campbell.
"Courtney Frederickson was one of the best players in the country and in the state of Minnesota coming out of Minnetonka high school," Bruno said. "She also played for the nationally acclaimed North Tartan travel program.
"A 6-2 stretch forward, Courtney brings a versatile interior game to our position-less, DePaul style of play. Courtney can post up, face the basket and shoot the three and is a good passer with a solid pull-up game.
"While injuries limited her playing time during her junior and senior Years, Courtney logged major minutes in her freshman and sophomore seasons at Wisconsin. Seeking a master's degree in Marketing, Courtney Frederickson is poised and ready to have a breakout 2020-21 season and make an impact on the BIG EAST as a fifth-year player."
Allen will continue a DePaul legacy as both her father Jeff Allen and uncle Brett Burkholder played for legendary coach Ray Meyer on the 1981-82 team that finished the regular season with a 26-2 record and was ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press Top 25.
Jorie Allen played 32 games in her first season with the Hoosiers averaging 1.9 points and 1.8 rebounds in 11 minutes per game for an Indiana team that went 24-8 including 13-5 in Big Ten play. She shot 47.4 percent from the field and had nine points and five rebounds against Nicholls State.
Allen came off a memorable high school career leading Bedford (Ind.) North Lawrence to four consecutive sectional titles while playing for her dad. The 2019 Indiana Miss Basketball averaged 18.1 points and eight rebounds as a senior and was an All-USA Today Second Team selection.
North Lawrence's all-time leading scorer with 1,930 points was a four-time All-State selection and ranked No. 51 in the nation by Collegiate Girls Basketball Report and No. 52 by ESPN's Hoopgurlz. She was an AAU standout with the Spiece Indy Lady Gym Rats and coach Danny Riego.
""I am so incredibly excited to continue my career at DePaul," Allen said. "Coach Bruno recruited me when I was still in high school, and DePaul was one of my top choices from the beginning. I now see that this is where I was meant to be, so I'm grateful he still believes in me and fortunate to be a part of his program.
"Because of the values he, his staff, and his players hold, I'll feel right at home. I'm excited about what attributes I can bring to the program---but I'm even more excited about what I will learn from those around me.
"Coach Bruno has done so much for the game of basketball and has established this historic and elite program. Like coach Bruno, my dad and my uncle played at DePaul under coach Ray Meyer, so I understand the rich basketball history of this university and I'm honored to be a part of it."
Bruno can hardly wait to begin working with this Big Ten transfer.
"We are very excited that Jorie Allen has chosen to continue her college basketball career with our DePaul program," Bruno said. "Jorie combines an extremely high level of competitiveness, hoops IQ, and an overdrive motor with a very versatile offensive skill set.
"She is a classic position-less player who can be effective scoring and distributing the ball from any of the five positions on the floor. Along with her versatility with the ball, Jorie does a great job of moving and scoring without the ball."
"Jorie Allen has been a winner at all levels of basketball and earned the top award for girls basketball while competing for her dad, former Blue Demon men's basketball player Jeff Allen. Jorie was also a travel team standout for coach Danny Riego's Spiece Indy Lady Gym Rats."
Fredrickson and Allen will bolster DePaul program that went 28-5 this season while winning its sixth BIG EAST regular-season title in the last seven years, a three-peat BIG EAST tournament crown and clinching its 18th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance.
The coronavirus-shortened season saw the Blue Demons wind up No. 15 in the Associated Press Top 25 and No. 14 in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches poll. They were on track to host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history by being seeded in the top 16 by the tournament selection committee.
