Freeman-Liberty and Moore Lead Blue Demons Past Marquette

Duo combines for 40 points including the final 14 as DePaul pulls away late from Marquette
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Javon Freeman-Liberty was the fire and Charlie Moore was the ice as DePaul posted a 68-61 win at Marquette on Saturday. Freeman-Liberty scored 19 points with six rebounds and two steals while Moore totaled 21 points including eight straight free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
The Blue Demons led by as many as 13 points in the second half before Marquette chipped away and briefly held a lead. Trailing by two with three minutes left Freeman-Liberty and Moore scored the final 14 points as the Blue Demons pulled away for the win.
Marquette opened up an early 9-5 lead with three three-pointers before the Blue Demons found their range as Freeman-Liberty and Kobe Elvis connected from distance on back-to-back possessions. After Darious Hall scored on a putback forcing a Marquette time out DePaul held a 13-9 lead in the midst of an 8-0 run.
DePaul (3-5, 1-5 BIG EAST) held the lead until three free throws by D.J. Carton gave the Golden Eagles a 24-22 advantage. Nick Ongenda tied the game before Elvis drove strong to the basket and scored as DePaul led once again and held the advantage into the break by a score of 30-24.
The second half played even over the first six minutes before the Blue Demons extended the advantage to double digits midway through the half. Hall scored on a nifty lay in to give the Blue Demons a 45-32 lead with 11:18 left in the game.
Marquette (8-7, 4-5 BIG EAST) didn't go away and pulled to within five on a steal and score with just under eight minutes on the clock. The lead dwindled and eventually the Golden Eagles took a 56-54 advantage on a three-pointer by Jamal Cain with 3:48 left.
However, DePaul trailed for less than a minute as Freeman-Liberty scored on a putback and on the next possession he hit two free throws to give the visitors the lead for good.
From that point Moore took over as he scored the final 10 points starting with a driving layup that was goaltended before knocking down eight straight free throws in the final minute.
Moore finished the game 10-for-10 from the free throw line and added three assists to his team-high 21 points. Freeman-Liberty was also perfect from the stripe at 5-for-5 with his 19 points. Hall totaled eight points and along with team highs of seven rebounds and three steals.
Carton led all scorers with 23 points and was the only player in double figures for the Golden Eagles.
DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena on Wednesday night to face St. John's. Start time is 8 p.m. on FS1 and WIND (560 AM).
