Big singles wins at Louisville Classic wrapping up tournament season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Yuliya Kizelbasheva and Eleanor Nobbs carried the day for DePaul Sunday in closing out the Louisville Tennis Classic and the Blue Demons' fall tournament season.
Kizelbasheva, who made a strong bid for the No. 1 singles position with graduate student Alina Kuzmenkova sitting out the fall with an injury, finished strong with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 victory over Emma Peeler of Ball State.
Nobbs continued demonstrating her exciting potential after defeating Ball State's Livia Lukacs 6-2, 6-1 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Coach Marisa Arce got a good look at her team's championship possibilities during the six fall tournaments. The Blue Demons will enter the dual-match season in January priming themselves for a run at the BIG EAST title after a runner-up finish last spring.
She watched the development of Kizelbasheva, Nobbs, Maddie Yergler, Valentina Martin and Kaya Rand in singles while monitoring the improvements of reliable and experienced veterans Marija Jovicic and Lenka Antonijevic.
Arce noted the immediate impact of Nobbs, the freshman from Bath, England who went 8-4 in singles this fall and won seven of her last 10 matches. Kizelbasheva was 7-7, often matched against No. 1-quality singles opponents and won her final two matches.
Kizelbasheva teamed with Antonijevic to form the No. 1 doubles team and qualified for the ITA Super Regional at Columbus, Ohio. They went 9-4 in the fall and won their last three matches. Jovicic and Yergler finished with a 3-2 record while Martin and Nobbs were 2-2.
The Blue Demons return to the courts on Jan. 15 for the two-day Indiana Winter Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
