Eight-team field will compete using Davis Cup format
CHICAGO – The DePaul men's tennis team opens play Friday at the Redbird Invitational hosted by Illinois State just two days after coach Matt Brothers, Vito Tonejc, Tripp Tuff, Luuk Wassenaar and freshman Marino Jakic returned from the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
The Blue Demons performed well on the national stage and are now part of an eight-team field converging on Downstate Normal.
Joining the "Band of Brothers" are the host Redbirds, Eastern Illinois, Drake, Saint Louis, Bellarmine, UIC and Marquette.
They will play a Davis Cup format for three flights---one singles match and one doubles match each of the three days.
Doubles will be eight-game pro sets with tiebreak at 7-7. Singles on Friday will be two out of three sets with a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set. Saturday and Sunday will be the traditional two of three full sets.
Tuff is off to a fast start with a 7-2 singles record and has won six of his last seven matches. Freshman Matteo Iaquinto is 5-1 while Lars Peder Minsaas is 4-2.
Vito Tonejc is 6-5 after doing well against high-caliber national competition at the ITA All-American Championships. Luuk Wassenaar is 3-2 and freshman Sven Moser is 4-3.
In doubles, Leon Huck and Wassenaar have won both of their matches while Jona Gitschel and Minsaas are 2-1.
