Pauly Paulicap notches 15-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead Blue Demons
NEWARK N.J. – DePaul and Seton Hall went toe-to-toe Wednesday night before the Pirates scored the final seven points to pull away late in a 60-52 decision over the Blue Demons. Pauly Paulicap put together a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double while Kobe Elvis scored 13 points for the Blue Demons.
The Blue Demons took an early 10-5 lead as five different players found the scoring column in the first eight minutes of action.
Seton Hall pulled to within three before Elvis scored on consecutive possessions to give DePaul a 19-12 advantage. Coming out of a Pirate time out, Elvis scored again in traffic and the Blue Demons led by seven with six minutes until halftime.
The Pirates scored eight straight points over the next two minutes as a three-pointer by Jared Rhoden bounced in to give the home team its first lead of evening at 22-21.
DePaul (3-10, 1-10 BIG EAST) didn't trail for long as the Blue Demons scored the game's next six points and the half was punctuated by Ray Salnave as he drilled a half-court shot just before the buzzer. His 45-footer gave the Blue Demons a 31-27 lead at intermission.
The first six minutes of the second half went back-and-forth and the Blue Demons trailed by three at 42-39. Elvis sparked a DePaul run with a three from the top of the key before Romeo Weems hit two free throws and David Jones scored on a driving layup. Jones' bucket forced a Seton Hall time out with 11:37 left in the game and DePaul holding a 46-42 advantage.
The Pirates scored nine straight points after the pause in play and took a 51-46 lead at the eight-minute mark. The advantage held for the remainder of the game as the Blue Demons pulled to within a point with 3:57 left, but could never regain the lead.
Paulicap gathered seven offensive boards and added a steal and blocked shot to lead DePaul. Elvis also grabbed four boards with three assists while Salnave scored seven points with seven rebounds and Weems finished with nine points and four boards.
Sandro Mamukelashvili led Seton Hall (13-8, 10-5 BIG EAST) with 25 points and 11 rebounds while Rhoden finished with 17 points.
DePaul continues the road trip on Saturday night when the Blue Demons visit St. John's. Start time is 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1 and WYLL (1160 AM).
