
Blue Demons Quiet the Storm on Saturday Night

DePaul led for just over 35 minutes of the game in 88-83 win at St. John's
QUEENS, N.Y. – Charlie Moore scored 24 points to lead four players in double figures as the Blue Demons posted an 88-83 win at St. John's on Saturday. Darious Hall added 11 and Oscar Lopez Jr. scored 10 as DePaul combined to shoot .630 from the field.
The Blue Demons took an early 9-3 lead behind five points from Pauly Paulicap. St. John's answered with eight straight to take an 11-9 advantage.
Lopez made his return to court for the first time since late December and started a 15-3 run with a pair of buckets before a jumper and three-pointer by Charlie Moore put the Blue Demons up 23-16. After a St. John's score, DePaul reeled off six more points capped by a breakaway dunk for David Jones forcing a Red Storm time out with the score at 29-19.
The first half of runs continued as Vince Cole scored five straight for St. John's and knotted the score at 37-37 with just under two minutes until halftime before Jones scored with seven seconds on the clock to give the Blue Demons a 41-40 lead at the break.
DePaul (4-10, 2-10 BIG EAST) pulled away early in the second half by scoring 13 of the game's first 15 points after intermission. Moore, Hall and Paulicap contributed during the run as the trio combined for 11 straight points with Hall's layup in transition making the score, 54-42, with 15 minutes left in the game.
Lopez gave the Blue Demons their largest lead of the game at 66-51 with 8:20 left, but St. John's had one last run as the Red Storm scored the next eight points and eventually closed the lead to four with 40 seconds on the clock.
Ray Salnave, Moore and Nick Ongenda each hit free throws before Ongenda iced the game with a dunk and the Blue Demons headed home to Chicago with an 88-83 victory.
Moore added eight assists and six rebounds while going a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line. As a team, the Blue Demons knocked down 14-of-17 (.824) attempts in the second half from the line. Hall added seven rebounds to his 11 points while Paulicap grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go with nine points. Salnave scored 11 points and Lopez finished with 10 off the bench.
St. John's (14-9, 8-8 BIG EAST) was led by 29 points from Julian Champagnie.
