DePaul and Loyola Fight to Scoreless Draw
2/21/2021 9:55:00 PM | MEN'S SOCCER
ROCKFORD, Ill. – After 110 minutes of game time, DePaul men's soccer notched a scoreless draw against Loyola at Mercyhealth Sportscore in Rockford, Ill. on Sunday night. Senior goalkeeper Drew Nuelle made nine saves and the DePaul back line fended off opportunities throughout.
Both teams played physically for the entire matchup as both sides surpassed 10 team fouls. While the first half didn't see much offense, Loyola looked for rhythm offensively as the second half progressed. DePaul's back half settled in denying quality looks at the net all evening.
In the second period of overtime, Nuelle made a crucial save on a point-blank opportunity in the goalie box. A cross skipped through the middle to the feet of a Loyola attacker who fired a shot off at close range. Nuelle stuffed the chance, the ball deflecting off of his shoulder and out of harm's way. In the end, the senior keeper had made four total saves in overtime.
DePaul's best opportunity in overtime came when David Gripman found the ball at his feet with just the goalie between him and the net in the 106th minute. Gripman was under pressure from behind and attempted a quick flick over the keeper, who reached high and got a finger on the ball, negating the scoring chance.
